Downplaying Symptoms

Next Wednesday, I need to complete a physical for my counseling position. I’ve already decided to downplay my symptoms.

At every juncture during my academic training, as well as during my employment history, I’ve felt an overwhelming need to minimize the true impact of my daily symptoms.

Of course, having to keep up this facade really takes a lot of energy. For example, I’ve recently noticed increased symptoms of my subglottic stenosis returning. I’ll downplay the impact of this symptom when I complete my physical with my general practitioner’s nurse practitioner.

I always try to emphasize my capabilities, as opposed to my limitations.
