Today was a very intense day in my work as a clinical psychologist. I met with a female resident who admitted to having suicidal ideation, with a plan.
Of course, these symptoms are very serious. I promptly informed the director of social work about the severity of this resident’s distress.
She informed the nursing home’s administrator about this resident’s current condition. The resident’s physician was also phoned, based upon my recommendation that her current antidepressant dosage be reviewed.
It was subsequently decided that it would be in this resident’s best interest to transfer her to an inpatient psychiatric facility.
It’s never easy to be up close and personal to this degree of emotional distress.
