One of the most awkward questions to ever ask someone with a chronic illness is “Are you better yet?” Chronic illness, by its very definition, is long-term.
Yes, there are certainly variations in the severity of our symptoms when we are dealing with chronic illness. Some days are much easier than others. Our symptoms wax and wane. Nevertheless, those symptoms never really go away. Unfortunately, we don’t ever “just get over” them.
In all of my years of living with chronic illness, I still am baffled by how very difficult it is for others to fully comprehend this painful reality. Looking relatively healthy, healthier than I truly am, only compounds this complexity.
I honestly appreciate that others want to believe that I am doing much better. How I wish that possibility were even possible.
