At one time or another, almost a with a chronic illness has heard a sympathetic friend utter the words “I know how you feel.” Of course, while such a sentiment is well-intended, it rarely feels that way when actually received by someone battling an ongoing condition.
Short-term illnesses give us but a fractional glimpse into the harsh realities faced by those of us who are challenged with adjusting to long-term conditions. Being sick is miserable for anyone. Knowing that your condition will never be cured is even more discouraging.
In all honesty, I never want my friends and family to truly understand how I feel, because I would never wish for them to actually endure the multiple stresses of my chronic illnesses.
