I’ve honestly lost count of how many times individuals have asked if “I’m analyzing them,” i.e., in response to finding out that I am a licensed clinical psychologist. No, I truly don’t ascertain your DSM-V Axis I disorder simply by having you wait on me at a restaurant, nor having you process my items at the department store’s checkout line.
Seriously, I’m not “on” 24/7 as a clinical psychologist. I do know that I am typically very observant. However, I’m not continuously using my clinical assessment and diagnostic skill set during each and every conversation throughout any given day. I do realize that I am both a doctor, as well as a patient. Dealing with multiple chronic illnesses consumes a lot of my time and energy on a daily basis.
