Chronically Ill, But Rarely Sick

Despite having multiple chronic illnesses, I’m very rarely sick, in the traditional sense of the word. I almost never develop a cold, for example. To date, I have been diagnosed with three autoimmune disorders.

My immune system is anything but deficient, or weak. In endocrinological terminology, my immune system is up-regulated. It is overly aggressive, and actively targeted to destroy my very own body.

I think that it’s very important to distinguish between the terminology of chronic illness versus sickness. I define sickness as a relatively short-term worsening of one’s health status. Chronic illness is distinctly different. I don’t ever think of myself as being sick, despite being seriously chronically ill.
