For everyone living with an invisible form of chronic illness, some of the most unwelcomed words are, “So, how are you feeling?” Don’t get me wrong, it’s always nice to have someone express genuine interest in how you’re doing.
It’s just a challenging question to answer completely honestly for those with chronic illness. I don’t expect everyone to want to hear the extended list of specific symptoms that I’m experiencing on any given day.
Nor do I necessarily want to offer detailed information about all of my symptoms, and their relative severities. Saying “I’m fine” isn’t an accurate reply either.
I’ve decided that the best way to respond is to say, “I’m just trying to do my best. Thanks for asking.” This expresses appreciation for someone’s inquiry.
It also keeps the response on a more positive note. I’m interested in knowing how others who are chronically ill respond to this same question.
