This early Friday afternoon, I find myself considering all of the medical diagnoses (reflecting both acute and chronic symptoms) that I have received over the years.
Don’t ask me why, but I began to wonder if there might be even a single letter of the alphabet that wasn’t reflected in my list of diagnoses! So, I decided to make the following comprehensive, alphabetical list of all of the medical diagnoses that I’ve ever received: acne, agoraphobia, allergic conjunctivitis, allodynia, anaphylaxis, aneurysm, anhedonia, asthma, astigmatism, atypical depression; blindness, blurred vision, boils, bronchitis, bruxism, bunions; cervical dysplasia; chicken pox, chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome, conjunctivitis, costochondritis; depression, dermatitis, diarrhea, diplopia, diverticulitis, dysmenorrhea, dysphagia, dyspnea; eczema; fatigue, fibrocystic breasts, fibroids, floaters; gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, generalized anxiety disorder; Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, hemorrhoids, hirsutism, hyperesthesia; hypersomnia; hypertension, hypothyroidism; idiopathic subglottic stenosis, impaired wound healing, incontinence, influenza, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome; L’hermitte’s phenomenon; measles, menorraghia, migraines, mumps, myopia, mycoplasma pneumonia, multiple sclerosis, myoclonus, myopia; nystagmus, numbness; obesity, optic neuritis; paradoxical vocal fold motion, paresthesias, periodic limb movement disorder, petechiae, post-tramautic stress disorder, presbyopia, purpura; restless legs syndrome; scoliosis, seasonal allergies, spasticity, strep throat, subglottic stenosis, sunburn, stye; temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), tension headaches, thyroid nodules, tinea versicolor, tinnitus trigeminal neuralgia; urinary urgency, urinary frequency, urinary tract infections, urticaria, Uthoff’s phenomenon; vasculitis, vitiligo; and, warts, Wegener’s granulomatosis, and wrist fracture.
This is, unquestionably, a staggeringly long list! Given that the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) lists approximately 68,000 diagnostic medical codes, things could always be much worse.
